Depending on your firmware you will
Go To:
Either
Menu - Record - Parameters (3.0 firmware)
or
Camera - Video Parameters (4.0 firmware)
To enable a camera for audio streaming and recording.
After activating and adding your IP Camera to your DVR or NVR you will want to
(1) set the Camera's "Main Stream's" "Video Stream" to be "Video & Audio"
You will also want to
(2) set the Camera's "Sub Stream's" "Video Stream" to be "Video & Audio"
Lastly you will want to
(3) enable Audio Recording.

(1) To set the Camera's "Main Stream's" "Video Stream" to "Video & Audio"
Go To:
Menu - Record - Parameters
Select the Camera that you want to enable Audio on.
After selecting the camera you will set the "Stream Type" to "Video & Audio"
Be sure to click "Apply" before moving onto another camera or leaving the page.
(2) To set the Camera's "Sub Stream's" "Video Stream" to "Video & Audio"
Go To:
Menu - Record - Parameters
At the Top select "Sub Stream"
Select the Camera that you want to enable Audio on.
After selecting the camera you will set the "Stream Type" to "Video & Audio"
Be sure to click "Apply" before moving onto another camera or leaving the page.
(3) To enable Audio Recording
Go To:
Menu - Record - Parameters
Select the Camera that you want to enable Record Audio on.
After selecting the camera you will select "More Settings" at the bottom of the page
Here you will see a check box for "Record Audio" make sure there is a check mark in the box and click "OK"
Be sure to click "Apply" before moving onto another camera or leaving the page.
(4) For an IP Camera you can log into the Camera and
Go To
Video/Audio - Audio
Here you can enable "Environmental Noise Filter" which helps with audio clarity and quality
You can also raise the Volume of the Microphone.
(5) For a Newer DVR
We need to go to the DVR local monitor -> Camera -> Video Parameters
choose main and sub stream, and change Audio from “Camera” to “Local” to get the external mic start to work.
